Their end is a bit reminiscent of the loyal housecarls of King Harold at the Battle of Hastings — since Fili and Kili were Thorin’s kinsmen, they stood by him and defended him bodily.
In the end, both were struck down by the orcs protecting Thorin, who ended up succumbing later after having suffered many wounds..
